This blog was inspired by all the times we’ve been asked, “Can I feed my dog turkey bones?”
As we sit down to enjoy our holiday feasts this season, it is important to note that there are menu items that should be avoided. You can take a peek at a blog we wrote covering treats that are perfectly suited for your dog; many of them are found on most Thanksgiving tables. However, there are holiday treats you should never give your dog. And here we’ve provided a brief list. (Can you guess which one tops the list?)
Turkey Bones
There has probably come a time when you’ve asked yourself: “Are turkey carcasses OK for my dog?” Well, the answer is: No way! Any kind of poultry bones can be extremely detrimental for your dog. The bones break apart into slivers and can cause abrasions in the digestive system. So, from all of us here at Dog Gone Amazing, we urge that you avoid giving your dog any kind of poultry bone to chew on.
Apple Seeds
Next on our list of holiday treats you should never give your dog are apple seeds. Dogs love apples and they are good for them, but the seeds contain a small amount of cyanide. While probably less than what would affect a human, dogs are far more sensitive to this chemical. Therefore, if you want to give your dog apple, slice it first.
Chocolate
It’s no secret that chocolate is bad for dogs. The darker it is, the more dramatic effect it will likely have. Just because you have seen your dog eat a piece of chocolate in the past does not mean they are immune to it; they most likely are not. We suggest you avoid it at all costs.
This list of holiday treats you should never give your dog will help you have a great holiday season without a trip to the vet. However, there are more foods you should know about. The ASPCA has a great list of all the foods you should steer clear of that you can check out here. From all of us around her at our Reno Dog Training Facility, we wish you the happiest of Thanksgivings!
